A favourite of southern California anglers, the kelp bass lives in and around kelp beds and shallow rocky reefs, ranging through the whole water column down to about fifty metres. Young fish pick benthic crustaceans from the bottom while adults take fishes and squid, and the largest individuals tend to hold the deeper water.
