A sand bass of the eastern Pacific that hangs over sand near rocks from the shallows down to nearly 200 metres, though it usually stays above thirty. The young pick crabs, clams and small shrimps off the bottom, while adults turn to hunting fishes, including midshipmen, and release their eggs into open water.
