The thornback guitarfish has a flattened, ray like front and a sharklike tail, with three rows of large thorns running down its back. It lies buried in fine sand and mud near kelp beds and on the flats of coastal bays in the eastern Pacific, hunting small invertebrates and fish from the shallows down to about fifty metres.
