The red codling is a soft bodied cod relative of southern Australia and New Zealand that favours muddy or sandy bottoms but also turns up on rocky ground, in estuaries and bays. It is most abundant along the edge of the continental shelf, between two and three hundred metres, and preys on fish, squid and crabs.
