A large sea catfish of South American coasts, the passany works shallow muddy bottoms in coastal waters and river estuaries, reaching about a metre. The male broods the clutch of large eggs in his mouth for ten to twelve days, and the sharp fin spines can inflict a nasty wound on a careless hand.
