A slow growing dogfish of the cool North Pacific, it carries a mildly venomous spine in front of each dorsal fin and moves alone or in groups along the coast and out into open water. It tracks water between about seven and fifteen degrees, ranging from near the surface down past a thousand metres to stay within that band.
