A garden conger that lives buried in the sand of lagoon and seaward reefs, this eel shows only its head above the bottom and reaches about 83 centimetres. It feeds on small fish and crustaceans, snatching them from the water above. Pale with dark bars, it slips back into the sand when disturbed.
