A deep bodied silvery fish of muddy inshore flats and river mouths, the common ponyfish can shoot its mouth forward into a downward tube to pick prey from the bottom. Juveniles crowd mangrove estuaries and tidal creeks while adults work soft bottoms a little offshore, and it reaches about twenty eight centimetres.
