Nearly transparent and fringed with skin flaps, this ghost pipefish drifts head down over algae, rubble and sand, mimicking a scrap of weed or debris. It stays pelagic for much of its life before settling onto the bottom to breed, where the female broods the eggs in her fused pelvic fins.
