A lionfish of deep offshore reefs, it favours soft and muddy bottoms rich in sponges and rubble, sometimes settling among soft corals alone or in small groups. It spreads tall, feathery fins as it hunts, and reaches about 20 centimetres. Like its kin it is rarely common and turns up only in small numbers at market.
