A cold water rockcod of the Southern Ocean, the stocky rockcod lives pressed against the underside of sea ice and feeds on copepods and krill. Its blood carries antifreeze proteins that keep it moving in water near freezing. It reaches about 17 centimetres and ranges from the surface down past 400 metres.
