This lamprey runs between sea and river, latching onto other fishes with its sucker mouth and feeding on their flesh while at sea. Out in the ocean adults range through the midwater to around 800 metres and have turned up more than a hundred kilometres off the coast, while the young burrow as filter feeders in river beds before heading downstream.
