Rough-Keeled Argonaut

Argonauta nouryi

Rough-Keeled Argonaut

The female builds a thin papery shell and rides it near the surface in open ocean, sometimes gathering in large numbers in daylight. The much smaller male carries no shell at all, and on meeting a female he detaches his fertilising arm, which can linger inside her mantle long after he has gone. The IUCN lists this argonaut as least concern.
