One of the largest flying birds alive, the southern royal albatross spans over three metres at the wingtips and glides for hours over open ocean, seizing food from the surface. It scavenges far offshore and reaches well over a metre in body length, and the IUCN lists it as vulnerable, with dogs and introduced predators a threat to nesting birds.
