A massive eared seal of South American coasts, the male can reach well over two metres and feeds across the continental shelf and slope on fish, squid, octopus and crustaceans. It hauls out on rocky shores and even pushes into rivers and glacial waters, while sevengill sharks count among its predators. The IUCN lists it as least concern.
