A long, silver predator of reefs and open water, the great barracuda hangs near the surface and strikes with a fast rush, slicing prey with a mouth full of dagger like teeth. The young grow up among mangroves and shallow inshore areas, while adults roam everywhere from murky harbours to open sea. Large ones have bitten people, usually in murky water or near a flash of metal.
