Known from only a short stretch of South African coast, the ornate sleeper ray lives on shallow reefs with sandy or gravelly patches, almost always inside the fifty metre line. It reaches about half a metre and, like other electric rays, carries organs that produce a shock. Sightings remain few and the species was only formally named in this century.
