A long narrow clam shaped like a folded blade, the sickle jackknife buries itself upright in sandy mud in sheltered shallows, sometimes among eelgrass, down to about forty metres. At any disturbance it pulls itself down its burrow with surprising speed, and reaches about thirteen centimetres.
