One of the largest snails in the Atlantic, the West Indian chank carries a thick heavy shell up to about 36 centimetres long. It works through coral reef, seagrass and mangrove bottoms over mud, rock and sand, from the shoreline down to roughly 80 metres, and is harmless to divers.
