Eroded Periwinkle

Littorina keenae

Eroded Periwinkle

The eroded periwinkle survives in the splash zone above most other shore life, scraping films of diatoms and algae off bare rock. When it stops to rest it glues its foot down with mucus and seals itself behind a trap door, staying alive through long dry spells out of the water.
