The granular ark settles into soft muddy bottoms of sheltered bays, estuaries and mangroves, often in dense beds packed across the intertidal flats. Its ribbed shell and red, iron rich blood let it cope with the low oxygen silt it filters food from, and it is one of the most heavily harvested ark clams.
