Cucullate Rock Oyster

Saccostrea kegaki

A rock oyster that cements itself to stone in the lower intertidal zone, where it sits exposed and clamped tight between tides. It filters plankton when the water covers it, and its rough cupped shell anchors it firmly to the shore.
