A large skate of cool shelf and slope waters, the intermediate skate reaches nearly three metres and feeds on all manner of bottom animals, including other skates. It lays tough egg cases and the embryos take a long time to develop, with males maturing only around a metre and four fifths long. Slow to breed and heavily fished, it is now Critically Endangered.
