This pugnacious damsel guards a patch of dead staghorn coral where it farms the filamentous algae it eats, and it will charge a diver without hesitation. Nips are mild but startling, and the fish turns most belligerent while breeding, clicking audibly during its standoffs. It keeps to shallow reef water, rarely deeper than five metres.
