Adding a buddy to a dive

Name the diver you were in the water with, and see what lands on their side.

The last step of logging a dive, Add a memory, has a Dive Buddies section. Tap Add buddy, search for the diver by name or username, and tap them to put them on the dive.

A buddy is someone who was in the water with you, written on one dive. A friend is a connection in your Friends list. Most of your buddies will be friends too, but they're different things, and adding a buddy doesn't add a friend.

Who you can name

Search will find:

  • your friends
  • divers you've already dived with on Divemates
  • other divers whose profile is open to being found

Someone who keeps their profile private stays hidden, unless the two of you have already dived together. And there's nobody to name if they aren't on Divemates yet, since a buddy is a real account rather than a name you type in.

Searching needs a connection, since the names come from us rather than from your phone's contacts. You can only name buddies on your own dives.

What your buddy gets

Naming someone is a request, not a record filed on their behalf. We let them know you added them to a dive, and the invitation waits in their Incoming with three answers: link it to a dive they already logged, add it to their logbook as a new dive, or dismiss it.

Nothing enters their logbook unless they pick one. Dismissing is quiet, and we don't report back either way, so treat no news as no news.

Name the same diver on four dives from one Saturday and that's one notification, not four.

Their name stays on your dive whatever they choose. It's your record of who you were down there with.

Note: for the other side of this, see "What's waiting in Incoming?"

Adding or removing someone later

Edit the dive and the same Dive Buddies section is waiting, with whoever is already on it. Add a name and they're invited then. Tap the x on a name to take it off.

Removing a name takes it off your dive, and that's all it does. If that diver already made their own record of the dive, it's theirs now and it stays in their logbook.

Note: logged the dive with no signal? The names ride along with it, and the invitations go out when the dive syncs.
