The same dive logged twice

Divemates flags repeats before you save, and you can point an arriving dive at one you already logged.

Divemates checks every dive that arrives against your logbook before anything is saved, so a repeat gets caught rather than filed twice. A dive we recognize is marked Already logged and unticked for you, and anything that slips past the check you can point at the dive you already logged instead of saving a second copy.

The check runs on everything that arrives: a file, a dive computer, Apple Watch, a connected account. A looser match, the same local time and depth but a different moment, is marked Might be logged and stays ticked. Two trips in different time zones really can collide like that, so we flag it and let you look rather than quietly dropping a dive you did.

Note: a flagged row is still yours to overrule. Tick it back on if it turns out to be a separate dive.

Adding an arriving dive to one you already logged

The check only catches near-identical repeats. When you logged the dive by hand on the boat and your computer synced the same dive later, the two never line up, so you point one at the other instead.

  1. Open Divemates → Dives → Incoming and tap the batch that arrived.
  2. Tap the dive you want to resolve.
  3. Under Or add it to a dive you already logged, pick the dive.
  4. Go through the fields and choose which side wins, Current log or Import log.
  5. Tap Done, then Save to logbook at the bottom of the list.

That's it. The dive keeps the site and buddies you logged on the boat, and picks up the numbers your computer measured better.

Note: the fields start on the imported value, so switch a row back to Current log wherever you'd rather keep what you logged. Depth Profile is the one to look at twice: taking the import's curve deletes the curve already on the dive for good.

Why it offers a whole day of dives

The dives on offer are the ones you logged around the same day, closest in time first, not the ones that match to the minute. A time typed on a swaying boat and a time recorded by a computer are almost never the same minute, so matching strictly would offer you nothing at all.

If the right dive isn't in the list, Choose another dive… opens your whole logbook. Any dive of yours can be the target.

When both are already saved

All of this happens before you save, so once two copies are sitting in your logbook there's nothing left to merge. Delete the one you don't want and keep the better record. See "Editing or deleting a dive".

Note: Apple Watch dives wait until your own dives have finished uploading before they import, so a dive you logged offline gets matched instead of duplicated.
