Turning off notifications
Mute a whole group, or just its emails, in Settings. Here's what each group sends.
Every notification we send belongs to a group, and you switch groups on and off in Divemates → Settings → Notifications. Push and email are separate switches, so you can keep your phone quiet and still get the email, or the other way around.
What each group sends
- Social: someone accepts your friend invite, or a friend adds you to one of their dives.
- Contributions: your own diving data, so an import finishing or failing, and a dive site you submitted being approved.
- Credentials: an insurance policy in your Vault nearing its expiry.
- Your Shop: claim decisions and staff changes, if you run a dive shop.
- News & Offers: product news. Push only, and it starts switched off.
The group is the unit. There's no switch for a single notification, and a change applies to the next thing we send, so there's nothing to save and nothing to wait for.
Push and email
Most groups start with both switched on. Social starts with email off, because an accepted invite is a moment thing and the push has already told you.
A switch can only ever quiet something, never force it. Some notifications are push only, and some go out as a push when we can reach your phone and as an email when we can't, so an email you were expecting may simply have been a push instead.
Our emails carry an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Using it switches off email for that one group and nothing else, and the switch in the app turns it back on whenever you want it.
The ones you can't switch off
A small set stays on: the messages telling you something you set up has stopped working. Today that's the notice that a dive computer account you connected has stopped syncing, and it's the only kind of email with no unsubscribe link.
It isn't mutable because it's the only signal. The app looks completely normal while dives quietly stop arriving, and you'd find out weeks later through a gap in your logbook. See "Connecting your Suunto account".
Silencing Divemates on your phone
The switches in the app stop us sending. To stop your phone showing anything from Divemates at all, that's a device setting:
- iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Divemates → Allow Notifications
- Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Divemates
When notifications are off there, the Notifications screen in Divemates says so at the top and gives you a button that takes you straight to the right place.
Note: with your phone silenced, the email switches keep working exactly as you left them. If it's the opposite problem and nothing is arriving when it should, see "I am not getting notifications".
