I'm not getting notifications

Three things decide whether a notification reaches you. Check them in this order.

Three things decide whether a notification reaches you: your phone's permission, the switches for that kind of notification, and whether that particular message travels by push or by email. Work through them in that order and you'll find the one that's in the way.

The permission and the switches both live in one place: Divemates → Settings → Notifications.

Start with your phone's permission

If the top of that screen says notifications are off, tap the button underneath it. Depending on where things stand, it either asks your phone for permission or takes you straight to Divemates' notification settings on your phone.

Once permission is granted, the same spot offers Send a Test Notification. If it lands, delivery works and your answer is in the switches below.

Note: if the app says this device isn't registered for push yet, close Divemates, open it again, and send another test.

The Push and Email switches

Below that, each kind of notification has its own Push and Email switch:

  • Social, when someone accepts your friend invite or a buddy logs a dive with you
  • Contributions, your own diving data, so an import finishing or failing and a dive site you submitted being approved
  • Credentials, when an insurance policy in your Vault is nearing its expiry

A switch that's off is off everywhere, not just on the phone you're holding. See "Turning off notifications" for what each group sends and which ones arrive by email as well as push.

Push and email aren't the same thing

Not every notification uses both, and that's deliberate. Some are only worth a push and never send an email. Others go out by email only when we can't reach you by push at all, so a quiet inbox can mean the push already did its job.

So if a push arrived and the email didn't, nothing is broken.

When the emails are the problem

We email the address you sign in with, so start with your spam folder and check that address is the one you're watching.

The emails you're allowed to opt out of carry an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Using it turns off email for that one kind of notification, and the Email switch on the notifications screen turns it back on.

One case the app can't fix on its own: if a Divemates email to your address bounced, or was reported as spam, we stop emailing it altogether to protect everyone else's mail. Tell us and we'll get it lifted.

The ones you can't switch off

A few messages exist to tell you something has genuinely broken, and those always send. Today that's the notice that a dive computer account you connected has stopped syncing: the app looks completely normal, dives just stop arriving, and that message is the only sign. See "Connecting your Suunto account".

Still silent after all that? Send us a note with your phone and what you were expecting, and we'll look at our side.
